REALITY BIKES

The masses take it to the streets

You’ve seen the lone white bicycles chained to poles with flowers and candles surrounding them, marking where a rider was killed. They’re chilling reminders of what can go wrong in city traffic, and they symbolize the reasons behind the Fourth Annual Memorial Ride and Walk. The New York City Street Memorial Project—which heads Ghost Bikes and the Pedestrian Memorial Project—honors those killed by drivers, and strives to make city streets safe for everyone: Since 2003, the Ghost Bike movement has expanded globally, and in New York City, there are 41 memorial bikes. The ride and walk will also honor Lai Ho, James Dong, and Josephine LaPlaca, three pedestrians killed this year.
