An eccentric new gift from Young Jean Lee
Young Jean Lee’s previous plays have deemed Asian-Americans “more or less retarded,” treated hipster audiences to screeds on their own self-satisfaction, and played havoc with the legends of Byron, Coleridge, and Wordsworth. In her latest drama, The Shipment, the Korean-American playwright and director offers her version of a “black identity–politics show,” putting an all-black cast through paces that include minstrelsy, Richard Pryor, and harangues against Whitey. If it’s anything like previous works, The Shipment won’t be sealed with a kiss, but it should deliver a play that’s vital, eccentric, and implicates the audience in its teasing provocations.
