The Lady Eve

(Preston Sturges, 1941). One of the most beguiling of all romantic screwball comedies, this pairs Barbara Stanwyck as a saucy card-sharp and Henry Fonda as a rich but prissy professor whose main interest is snakes. They meet on an ocean liner and get involved in a hilarious battle of the sexes. It's one Sturges's sly masterpieces.
