“A bachelor, loner, atheist, and the only person in town to practice studio photography,” Mike Disfarmer, né Mike Meyer, enjoyed a 40-year career (1917–1956) in the small town of Heber Springs, Arkansas. A peculiar man who even changed his name to reflect estrangement from his rural, farming community, Disfarmer took extraordinary photographs of emphatically ordinary people. Many thousands of negatives and prints survive, recovered from photo albums, closets, and attics by New York art dealers. For Disfarmer at St. Ann’s Warehouse, puppeteer Dan Hurlin will use table-top puppets, Magic Lantern techniques, and 8mm film to portray the reclusive shutterbug. The production features text by Sally Oswald and an original banjo score by Dan Moses Schreier.
