OLD GHOSTS

Obie winner Ain Gordon explores a piece of forgotten history

Daphney and Samuel Oldham are names that may not ring a bell, but their story—as told in Obie-winning writer-director Ain Gordon's latest play, In This Place . . .—should make a lasting impression. In 1830, Samuel Oldham, a free black living in Lexington, Kentucky, purchased the freedom of his wife, Daphney, and their two sons with the money he had saved and, together, they built a house (the first African-Americans to do so in Lexington). Now, the nearly forgotten tale of the Oldham House finally gets its due with this one-woman multimedia play, co-presented by 651 Arts and the Irondale Ensemble Project, starring Michelle Hurst, with original video by filmmaker Joan Brannon.
