In his 1966 interview with the East Village Other, Andy Warhol said, "If you want to know all about Andy Warhol, just look at the surface of my paintings and films and me, and there I am. There's nothing behind it." Well, don't tell that to the person who bought his 1963 piece, Green Car Crash (Green Burning Car I), for almost $72 million. Warhol's work continues to fascinate, and this latest exhibition, Warhol From the Sonnabend Collection, is certainly one to drool over. The paintings, sculpture, and works on paper shown here are from the collection of the late legendary dealer Ileana Sonnabend, an early and passionate supporter of his. All but three of the pieces on display date from the essential years of 1962 to 1965, with his major series—Death and Disaster, Liz, Marilyn, Jackie, Brillo Boxes, and Flowers—all represented. And, of course, it wouldn't be complete without those Campbell's soup cans.
