Courtney Love, in a rare plateau of lucidity, once called Stephen Malkmus "the Grace Kelly of indie rock." But for social climbing alone, perhaps Bob Mould deserves the honor—the secretive guitarist has been a rising, constant catalyst in American rock for 30 years. As the frontman for cult post-hardcore trio Hüsker Dü, Mould set the way for countless scrappy three-chorders to follow (including Love's baby daddy), and then, as a softer solo artist, he cracked the Top 10 modern-rock charts with "See a Little Light." After dabbling in professional wrestling scriptwriting—and why not? The universe is expanding—he now hosts the monthly rock/electronica Blowoff party with Richard Morel and has a new album, Life and Times, out April 7 (on ANTI- Records, which bodes well). Like the royalty he is, Mould brings all strains of people together—to dance like spazmots, sure, but it still counts.
