FISTS OF FURY

Qui Nguyen stages more bone-crunching mayhem

The Samurai Creed, which dates back to the 14th century, concludes: "I have no armour; I make Benevolence my Armour. I have no sword; I make No Mind my Sword." I might prefer a Taser and a can of mace, but let's hope "benevolence" and "no mind" serve the heroine of Qui Nguyen's new action play Soul Samurai. This co-production of Vampire Cowboys and Ma-Yi concerns Dewdrop's attempts to make her way from the wilds of Coney Island back to the Lower East Side—kind of like The Warriors in reverse. Nguyen recently described the piece as a marriage of "samurai films and chop-socky kung fu flix" to " '70s blaxploitation and modern hip-hop." Sounds like a heck of a wedding.
