LET'S DANCE

What Spoon would sound like as a DIY disco act

Here's a sweet double bill for fans of arty guitar rock that never privileges texture at the expense of groove. England's Fujiya & Miyagi have been operating at the fringes of the international indie scene since the early part of this decade, but last year's Lightbulbs—their first album with a live drummer—made a strong case for wider renown; like me, these guys appear to have spent long hours pondering what Spoon would sound like as a DIY disco act. School of Seven Bellsare former Secret Machines dude Ben Curtis's new group with twin sisters Alejandra and Claudia Deheza, familiar to some from their days fronting On!Air!Library; on Alpinisms, their recent debut, the trio layers creamy harmony vocals and thick post-shoegaze guitars over appealingly clinical math-funk beats.
