New York City–based photographer Becky Yee, who recently captured images of teenage prostitutes in Tokyo working for money to buy luxury-brand handbags and clothing, has found another equally fascinating phenomenon on the outskirts of Japan's largest city. In her new show, More Than a Woman, she portrays the life of a middle-aged computer engineer who lives in a three-bedroom apartment with his many "Dutch wives" (a/k/a sex dolls). Claiming to own the world's largest collection of sex dolls, he has everything from the cheap-vinyl inflatable "Big Sue" to the $10,000 eerily human-looking "Real Doll." Yee explores the motives and desires behind the collection and asks what needs these dolls are fulfilling that can't be satisfied in Japan's perfectionist culture.
