REAL AMERICANS

National Theater of the United States of America present Chautauqua

Despite occasional attempts such as our own Lincoln Center or Washington’s Kennedy Center, America has never managed a national theater of its own. But don’t tell that to the marvelous experimental corps NTUSA—the National Theater of the United States of America— a company that exists “for your entertainment, enlightenment, and greater glory.” In their latest endeavor, titled Chautauqua, they’re investigating what Theodore Roosevelt once described as “the most American thing in America”: the Chautauqua lectures, traveling summer events that instructed willing attendees in the mysteries of Protestant religion, progressive politics, and high culture. NTUSA have now erected their own Chautauqua tent at P.S.122, reinventing the form and purloining the content.
Tuesdays-Saturdays, 7:30 p.m.; Sundays, 5 p.m. Starts: Feb. 21. Continues through March 15, 2009
