The Fifteen-Year-Old Girl

(Jacques Doillon, 1989). This complex and claustrophobic, subtly-acted three-character study centers on a teenage girl (Judith Godreche) who is dating a boy her age (Melvil Poupaud) although his father (played by director Doillon) looks to make out with her as well. Poupaud received a 1989 "Most Promising Actor" Cesar (the French Oscars) for his moving performance as the gawky boyfriend—he has since fulfilled his promise in films of Ozon and Desplechin.
