Leonard Cohen is long accustomed to the superlatives thrown his way—so much so that, in his early years as a poet and novelist, he escaped to the Greek isle of Hydra and lived in near-hermitage for awhile. But quite simply, he is one of the best folk-rock singer/songwriters of the past 40 years, the rare artist who can now hear the broad expanse of his influence. From anti-Vietnam protests to “Hallelujah” (yep, Jeff Buckley covered it), he has set his weathered baritone in succinct, heartrending honesty—and, over his prolific career, has still always felt like an intimate secret. His 2008 European/Canadian tour was the first foray in 15 years—and an American date is long, long overdue.
