Louisiana Story
(Robert Flaherty, 1948). Flaherty's last film is set in the bayou country. A fitting culmination to a long career, it's generally considered less a doc about the Cajun people than an autobiographical film about the director himself. From the viewpoint of a Cajun boy, it seems to be a poetic reflection of Flaherty's own youth, in which he explores his life-long relationship to the wilderness. Virgil Thompson's superb musical score is the ideal accompaniment to the picture's simple visual beauty.
