The world is ever subject to misgovernment and misrule. And even when incompetents and tyrants cede office, they can leave terrible troubles in their wake—budgetary crises and unpopular wars, say. Yet the dethroning of Berenger, the bungling monarch in Eugène Ionesco's 1962 absurdist drama, Exit the King, has even more severe consequences—it eliminates his kingdom altogether. Berenger (who also appears in Ionesco's Rhinoceros and The Killer) begins the play with his receipt of a devastating prognosis: He and his world have just 90 minutes left to live. Aussie artiste Geoffrey Rush plays the vanishing ruler, with Susan Sarandon and Lauren Ambrose as his distressed consorts. Neil Armfield directs these sovereign occurrences.
