BLOODY GOOD

Baroque opera and B-flick vampires

Perhaps Elizabeth LeCompte found Francesco Cavalli's 1641 baroque opus, La Didone, a trifle bloodless—she's corrected that hematic imbalance by splicing the opera with scenes from the 1965 B-flick Planet of the Vampires. (This coalescence of high culture and low recalls House/Lights, one of the Wooster Group's most pleasing shows, which mingled Gertrude Stein's Dr. Faustus Lights the Lights with the lascivious pleasures of the lesbian caper film Olga's House of Shame.) The result: an assemblage of live action and video, love story and horror story, lute and electric guitar. Singers Hai-Ting Chinn and John Young join Wooster Group regulars Scott Shepherd and Kate Valk in this biting new performance.
