CLASSICAL GAS

Rock meets strings, and no one gets hurt

Just as the Erlking chased Schubert, classical music haunts rock 'n' roll. Sometimes, it's amazing "November Rain," Steve Vai, side B of Abbey Road but all too often, it's just Metallica huffing in front of some cellos. "The Wordless Music" series is proudly the former, an ongoing experiment that pairs rock/electronica artists with symphonic instrumentalists for cozy, genre-twisting performances. This week: Charles Spearin, of Broken Social Scene and Do Make Say Think, performs his introspective art-pop album The Happiness Project, and Todd Reynolds and the Evan Ziporyn Group Verge Ensemble crank out Stockhausen's "Zodiac" and Stravinsky's "The Soldier's Tale." Bring your lighter and your monocle; you'll be raising both.
