The President

(Carl Dreyer,1919). This is Dreyer's first film, and although it contains themes for which the great Danish director's later works would be celebrated, the story is a contorted melodrama about a judge and his illegitimate daughter, treated clumsily, in an elaborate flashback technique borrowed from Griffith and performed by an over-gesticulating cast.
