Consider the 10th annual Central Brooklyn Jazz Festivala month-long, multi-venue affair presented by the Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortiumto be the musical equivalent of the locavore food movement. In large part, its a celebration of heritage musicians deserving of more attention in their maturity: Drummer Roy Haynes, saxophonist Lou Donaldson, pianist Randy Weston, singer Melba Joyce, and tenor saxophonist Houston Person are all scheduled to perform at various times, while the late bassist Leonard Gaskin and trumpeter Freddie Hubbard will be inducted into the Brooklyn Jazz Hall of Fame. The festival also draws attention to worthwhile lesser-knowns, such as singer Juju Gordon, saxophonist Jeff King, and pianist Dwight Dr Mambo Brewsters Experience Ensemble, who should shine on their relatively more casual home turf, away from Manhattan.
