BETWEEN THE LINES

Scribe shares his inner/fictional self

The always-excellent Happy Ending Music and Reading series tonight welcomes the celebrated writer Colson Whitehead (The Intuitionist, John Henry Days), whose new novel, Sag Harbor, will be out at the end of April. A former columnist and critic for the Voice, Whitehead insists that he and Benji—the teen protagonist of Sag Harbor, who spends his summers in the African-American enclave of the Hamptons away from his predominantly white prep-school peers—are nothing alike, even though their biographies sound similar. Either way, we’re just happy that Benji—er, we mean Whitehead—will be at this program, along with writers Kevin Wilson and Amy Cohen and singer-banjoist Sam Amidon.
