One shouldn’t confuse The Bus Stop, a comedy by the Nobel Prize–winning Chinese writer Gao Xingjian, with the romantic 1956 Marilyn Monroe vehicle, despite the similar titles. For one thing, Monroe would be hard-pressed to find an appropriate role in Xingjian’s play, which was banned from production after the Chinese government described it as “spiritual pollution” (it may have served as an allegory for Communism). The controversial work follows the thoughts of eight diverse characters—including an old man on his way to a chess match and a bureaucrat who’s been involved in shady dealings—as they await public transportation. Theatre HAN produces the piece, in a new translation by Shiao-Ling Yu. Director Samantha Shechtman drives the drama.
