Thieves Highway

(Jules Dassin, 1949). Jules Dassin’s strongest American movie is an exercise in film gris proletariat expressionism that turns a quick job undertaken by a free-lance trucker into a journey to the end of the night. Excellent perfs including Valentina Cortese as a sultry hooker and Lee J. Cobb inventing the villain he’d later play in On the Waterfront.
Sun., March 29, 1:30, 5:10 & 9 p.m., 2009
