WITCH WAY

It’s magic at the Sunshine

When celebrated author John Updike passed away in January, he left American literature with many riches by which to remember him, including six Rabbit Angstrom novels, poems like “The Beautiful Bowel Movement,” and three New England divorcees who made literary and movie magic: The Witches of Eastwick. The 1987 film version of Updike’s tale stars Cher, Susan Sarandon, and Michelle Pfeiffer as wounded single women who discover they have otherworldly powers and decide to use them to set one man straight—a devilish Jack Nicholson. The Girl Power quotient is high, but the orgy allusions are what really make this a film to see.
