No less an authority than the Bible has declared, "It is more blessed to give than to receive." Yet Philip, the hero of Christopher Hampton's 1970 comedy The Philanthropist (an answer to Molière's The Misanthrope), is an exceptionally giving man—and not at all blessed. His great generosity of spirit saddles him with awkward friendships, distasteful sexual entanglements, and an academic career with dim prospects. Perhaps Broadway audiences and producers will experience a better return on their investment when they donate their cash to the Broadway revival, directed by David Grindley. Matthew Broderick stars as the agonizingly polite professor. Jonathan Cake and Steven Weber star as his less kind colleagues.
Tuesdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Wednesdays, Saturdays, Sundays, 2 p.m. Starts: April 10. Continues through June 28, 2009
