(Nagisa Oshima, 1967). One of the more rarely shown works in the Oshima series, this singular film derives from a book by Tomomichi Soeda that studies song both as an expression of discontent among the Japanese and as their escape into fantasy. Bawdy songs are part of the intrinsic texture of its story, which mixes realistic scenes with fantasy sequences as it follows the adventures of four youths who come to take entrance exams for Tokyo University.
