MACHINE MAN

Lou Reed promises ‘no songs’

Named after his infamous 1975 slab of free-noise tone poetry, Lou Reed’s Metal Machine Trio (MM3, if you’re nasty) features Reed on guitar, Ulrich Krieger on tenor sax and electronics, and Sarth Calhoun on live processing. “A night of deep noise” is what Reed is promising at each of these two concerts, and that means “no vocals” and “no songs,” FYI. (Surprising to hear Reed, the lifelong contrarian, submit to someone else’s definition of a song, isn’t it? He’s totally the type to refer to a half-hour of amp drone as a catchy tune.) Last October, the group did a similar two-night gig at REDCAT in Los Angeles, a recording of which Reed just released through his website as The Creation of the Universe. It might provide a preview of what he’s got in store here; then again, it might not.
