Everyone makes a big hullabaloo about the Best Picture category at the Oscars each year, but NYU is giving due attention to the 2009 winner of Best Foreign Short, Toyland, at Short, Excellent & Famous: Nine Outstanding Award-Winning German Short Films. Jochen Alexander Freydank’s guilt-ridden 13-minute film is about a young boy who believes his Jewish neighbors are being sent to a wonderful place called “Spielzeugland” in 1942. Practice your Deutsch: Freydank will be on hand after the screening for a Q&A. Also screening is Tom Twyker’s True, which stars Natalie Portman as a lovebird in Paris.
