Eyes Wide Shut

(Stanley Kubrick, 1999). Stanley Kubrick’s posthumously released swan-song feels like a rough draft at best—the crass location inserts, dubbed orgy, and insipid score suggest the movie was far from completion. Ponderously (up)dated, yet surprisingly faithful to Arthur Schnitzler’s erotic phantasmagoria, this is a movie in which events staged are trumped by those imagined: As Nicole Kidman’s agonized soliloquy makes the most compelling sex scene, the movie becomes its own critique—no wonder Kubrick spent so many years pondering this project and so much time in production.
