Middleman

(Satyajit Ray, 1975). Shot during the early days of Indira Gandhi’s “emergency rule” in the pressure-cooker atmosphere of Satyajit Ray’s native Calcutta, The Middleman is the bleakest of Ray’s films—a morality tale played out against a tatty backdrop of matter-of-fact chaos. Everything in this tale of an unemployed Brahmin’s attempt to go into business builds up to the bottom falling out.
