Poil de Carotte

(Julien Duvivier, 1932). Duvivier's talkie adaptation of Jules Renard's popular autobiographical novel is one of his finest works, superior to his late silent version, with a brilliant performance by child actor Robert Lynen as the lonely and sensitive country boy bullied by his mother. In 1944 this fine actor, a Resistance fighter, was murdered by a German firing squad.
