Produced by tabla master Samir Chatterjee's Chhandayan organization, the annual All-Night Concert of Hindustani Classical Music is the only domestic version of a venerable and reliably transcendent South Asian tradition. Following a sarod-sitar duet and a performance by vocalist Mitali Banerjee Bhowmik, an early highlight of this 11-hour marathon should be Chatterjee's own Tablaphilia for 25 tablas. The event's 10th edition continues with performances by vocalist Mashkoor Ali Khan, sitarist Soumitra Lahiri, and vocalist Padma Talwalkar. The marathon concludes with a sunrise set by the amazing Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, creator of the mohan veena, a stringed instrument played like a steel guitar. Peaks and valleys may be the nature of most musical marathons, but not this one. And if you hit a wall of exhaustion, you can always stumble out for a quick cup of tea or plate of saag paneer.
