FENCED IN

Is Israel's Security Fence the new Berlin Wall?

British playwright David Hare is emphatically not a Berliner—neither a resident of the German city, nor a jam doughnut. His 55-minute monologue Berlin/Wall about the metropolis begins, "I'm back in Berlin and, as usual, I can't get the hang of it." Hare has paired this speech, a cheerful meditation on the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, with a lecture about another partition—the fence that will soon delineate Israel's borders. As Hare writes, "The Berlin Wall was built to keep people in. This one, they say, is being built to keep people out." The Public Theater will feature Hare performing these twinned travelogues.
Thursdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Sundays, 2 & 7 p.m. Starts: May 14. Continues through May 17, 2009
