PRINCE CHARMING

Will Oldham is feeling a little friendlier these days

Mindful perhaps that copies of Beware, his new album as Bonnie "Prince" Billy, won't sell themselves, Will Oldham has been making himself more available to the press than is his usual habit—and not just as an opportunity to fuck with people desperate to know why he uses so many pseudonyms. When I spoke to him on the phone a few months ago for a magazine piece, the bearded indie-folk troubadour couldn't have seemed more cordial—especially compared to our previous conversation, when he played what sounded like a Lynyrd Skynyrd record so loudly I could hardly hear his answers to my questions. This newly accommodating persona may or may not augur a slick set of Nashville-ready country-rock jams tonight: Even if his media manner has taken on the whiff of professionalism, Oldham's way of unpacking the rituals of performance still comes straight out of art school.
