The Prisoner of Shark Island

(John Ford, 1936). This fascinating, rarely shown flick recounts the true story of Dr. Mudd (Warner Baxter), who had treated John Wilkes Booth after his assassination of Lincoln. Mudd's compassion for Booth leads him to become an American Dreyfuss, a victim accused of conspiracy in the death of the President, condemned to life on a horrific island prison, a 19th-century Guantanamo. Bert Glennon's cinematography turns the prison into a wondrous object of light and shadow.
