Tokyo's Yayoi Kusama is still making magic
The 80-year-old Yayoi Kusama, who has resided in a psychiatric hospital in Tokyo since the early '70s, once again proved why she is the reigning queen of the Japanese art world when, in November—during an economic meltdown, no less—one of her first Infinity Net works (a large canvas covered in thick swirls of paint) sold at Christie's New York for almost $5.8 million—the second highest bid for a work by a living female artist. For this special exhibition at Gagosian Gallery to celebrate her 80th birthday, Kusama—who claims she has been haunted by hallucinations of circles and dots since childhood—has created several dazzling new works. Not to be missed is Aftermath of Obliteration of Eternity, a dark, closed-door "infinity room" that uses optical devices to trick viewers into seeing a peaceful, shimmering mirage unfold all around them.
