GENERAL HOSPITAL

How a centaur raised the world's first doctor

Is there a doctor in the house? Well, at least one will appear—if only onstage—during the run of Ellen Stewart's new play. La MaMa's mama has scripted the tale of Asclepius, the legendary son of Apollo and the world's first physician. Born of a dying mother and raised by a centaur, Asclepius founded the art of medicine, popularized the caduceus, and never had cause to contend with a single HMO. He was eventually felled by Hades—saving people from certain death will tend to annoy the lord of the underworld. Stewart also directs this operation, which boasts a cast of 15. Happily, you needn't be insured to attend.
Thursdays-Sundays, 7:30 p.m. Starts: May 28. Continues through June 14, 2009
