Afrobeat's most famous son knows his own power
Femi Kuti may be inextricably tied to his father (legendary Afrobeat artist Fela Anikulapo-Kuti), but his youthful wiles lend a Westernized, accessible spin to the genre his father once reigned over. Born in London and raised in Nigeria, Kuti champions those boisterous Afrobeat roots, but also intertwines them with torchy funk and politically charged hip-hop, as his paramount 2001 sophomore album Fight to Win proved, with its swingy cameos from Common and Mos Def. His follow-up, last year's Day by Day, hints at the new confidence he'll bring live; however he manages to rip like that in the sexy, wise "Tension Breaks Africa," he'd best never stop.
