Jessica Lea Mayfield+Among the Oak & Ash

Young Jessica Lea Mayfield has Dan Auerbach riding shotgun on With Blasphemy So Heartfelt, but the Black Key hangs back, sprinkling flecks of sinewy guitar and other bits of magic potion into her acoustic bracers. And Mayfield's in a saddish way: Heartbreak, horndogging, and bone slivers grate between the plural and her first person singular. "You can touch me if you want to," she drawls in "Kiss Me Again," "but I've ruined everything I've ever loved." As Among the Oak & Ash, Josh Joplin and Garrison Starr's arms-length versions of well-thumbed traditionals such as "Peggy O" and "Hiram Hubbard" could use some smudge and soot. With Lorraine Leckie & Her Demons.
