I don’t think I’ve ever heard the guy spiel for a moment, and that’s saying a lot. The pianist plays around town constantly and, from his Ravi Coltrane gigs to his own engagements, he consistently brings whomping rhythmic thrust and a consummate sense of groove. But focus is his forte; he always leaves an idea before it’s wrung out. His working trio with bassist Hans Glawischnig and drummer Eric McPherson is a marvel of rapport. MACNIE
