Akira Kurosawa directed films in his native Japan unbeknownst to the rest of the world for nearly a decade until his 1950 masterpiece Rashomon arrived to shake up the West, winning the Foreign Film Oscar and Venice Film Festival Grand Prize. Set in 12th-century Japan, the story concerns the apparent murder of a samurai and the rape of his wife as recounted by four unreliable witnesses—the samurai, his wife, a woodcutter, and the rugged bandit, played by Kurosawa favorite Toshiro Mifune.
