The "King of Swing" holds court once again at the Benny Goodman Centennial, his town's reverent three-day fete of the wildly influential clarinetist and big band leader. That's no small catalog to undertake—Goodman scored more top 10 hits than almost anyone of the era; performed with a laundry list of the finest singers and musicians (and took songbird duties himself, on occasion); and forever sweetly altered the structure of popular American jazz. And although this boppin' shindig honors the anniversary of Goodman's birth, expect key performers Ken Peplowski, Buddy DeFranco, and Bob Wilber to pay due regard to the day he singlehandedly began the swing music era: August 21, 1935, when he played the Palomar Theater in Los Angeles to seismic results. And the Lincoln Center ain't a shabby place to sing, sing, sing, his praises.
