X-ACTING WORDS

Punk rabble-rousers return to fight the Battle of Los Angeles again

What's weirder about reunited underground punks X: that they were originally discovered by a member of the Doors, or that they now have a Twitter? Regardless, Ray Manzarek's protégés get a pass on both because their current tour is a glorious blast of oxygen to their 32-year career; they're still fiercely cohesive, still a nod wry and subversively sing-song (crazygirl Exene Cervenka's vox smack of mocking more than ever), and are culling wisely from their first few/best albums. You'll remember every riff and John Doe roar from Los Angeles (1980) whether you were front row then or not yet outta the womb, because it's around you today and every day in diluted Social Distortion/Krays carbons. Pushing 50, these guys still know: When a lovely flame doesn't die, sweat gets in your eyes. With Steve Soto and the Twisted Hearts.
