A PASSAGE TO INDIA

New films from Bollywood and beyond

The Indian film industry produces a world-record 1,000 features a year, but of these, only a handful of Bollywood blockbusters and festival films ever make their way to American screens. MOMA's New India series is filling in the gaps with a two-week 16-film show that captures the full range of genres and styles in India today. Highlights include Ashutosh Gowariker's spectacular Jodhaa Akbar (2007), with a cast of 1,000 elephants; Zoya Akhtar's Luck by Chance (2009), a witty satire of the Bollywood dream factory; and Megan Doneman's Yes Madam, Sir(2008), narrated by Helen Mirren, a documentary portrait of controversial Kiran Bedi, India's first elite policewoman who became the warden of one of Asia's most notorious jails.
