BED, BATH, AND BEYOND

Dancing among the urinals in a hotel bathroom

Of all the unusual things we've seen in public restrooms (where do we even begin?), we've never seen anyone suddenly break into dance among the stalls. But this is what Yanira Castro + Company promises for its newest site-based installation Dark Horse/Black Forest, which is set amid the sinks and toilets of the Gershwin Hotel's lobby bathroom. Each piece is a love story of sorts, beginning with an emotional exchange between a couple (a rotating cast features performances with either two men or a man and a woman) and then transitioning into a sensual dance, using video screens, mirrors, and very little clothing. The company is also offering performances designed for your home toilet—though maybe they don't know that the average size of an NYC apartment bathroom is two-by-two.
