The temple of soul wouldn't have just any old house band. In the '60s, Stax Records ardently reinvented Southern soul with a stellar roster that included Otis Redding, Albert King, and Wilson Pickett and also the best backing outfit in the game, Booker T. & the MGs. Led by teenaged organist Booker T. Jones, the ensemble piped in for some of the decade's most enduring hits and charted enough of their own (including "Green Onions" and "Hang 'Em High") to score spots in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame. Today, a staggering three decades after his last output (1978's Try and Love Again), Booker T. offers up Potato Hole, a meditative soul-rock encounter featuring the Drive-By Truckers, Neil Young, and—naturally—the rich Hammond B-3 organ grooves he made famous. It was worth the wait.
