Every time the Argentine pianist leaves his Barcelona neighborhood for a trip to NYC, he has a handful of new ideas waiting to be tested by some old friends. The dudes who populate this large ensemble are Klein kin from way back—the bandleader spent a chunk a time here, testing his initial charts at Smalls. These days those early experiments are refined but not codified. This is a rhythmically eloquent and melodically quirky big band bent on dodging formula. Between the elaborate charts and the oddball charisma, they’re captivating.
