Italian filmmakers Matteo Garrone, Paolo Sorrentino, and Silvio Soldini all recently scored big with the critics for their films Gomorrah, Il Divo, and Days and Clouds, respectively, and, not surprisingly, they are all veterans of the Film Society's Open Roads: New Italian Cinema, the expertly curated week-long festival of contemporary Italian films. Now in its ninth year, the festival brings together a group of films not likely to be seen anywhere else in the U.S. Tonight's opener Brave Men, directed by Edoardo Winspeare, concerns an esteemed judge who falls for a woman with ties to a notorious crime organization. Other highlights include Effedià : On My Awful Way (June 7 and 10), a documentary about the brief life of singer-songwriter Fabrizio De Andrè (dubbed the "Italian Bob Dylan"), and Ferzan Ozpetek's A Perfect Day (June 8 and 11), a thriller about the 24 hours leading up to the moment when the lives of a group of strangers become inextricably linked.
