A bit of verse, lots of nimble extrapolation, written elements that conjure everything from Ra to rumba—the trumpeter has myriad approaches on his new record, and a mix of èlan and energy brings some singularity to the table. The poetry can seem secondary; it’s the deep rapport of the foursome that keeps heads spinning. This stage version of the band boasts Loren Stillman up front with Alessi, and something tells me they’ll be passing the ball around real quick.
