THE WORLD IN TIME

Cuba comes to Canadian rock

Broken Social Scene, otherwise known as Canada's mafia, claims members with a wide swath of side gigs: Stars, Metric, Feist, Charles Spearin's Happiness Project. But none of the gaggle have proven quite as exploratory as Andrew Whiteman's Apostle of Hustle; inspired by the guitarist's family trip to Cuba, the project blends traditional Spanish sounds (mambo, flamenco) with pointedly political lyrics and inquisitive, exuberant charm. Eats Darkness, the third offering, is a partially apt title—for while Whiteman takes care to acknowledge the perils in the world he explores, he doesn't conceal it wholly so much as find the universal faith. With Forro in the Dark and Brian Bonz.
