Youssou N'Dour

The Senegalese singer-songwriter and his astonishing Etoile de Dakar band kick off the ten-day "Muslim Voices: Arts & Ideas Festival" with a concert focusing on his immersion in the Islamic world. Expect material from his 2004 album Egypt, a masterful expression of personal faith embellished with Cairean strings and, of course, the slippery Wolof beats that underlie N'Dour's complexly ecstatic mbalax sound. The evening will begin with a performance of a new suite by Iraqi-American composer Amir ElSaffar.
Fri., June 5, 8 p.m., 2009
